Every matchmaker in Canada says their members are “vetted.” Almost none will tell you who does the checking, what it covers, or when it happens. Two firms in this country claim background checks at all, and neither names a provider.
We use Triton Canada, an independent Toronto screening company, a member of the Professional Background Screening Association, SOC 2 certified and BBB accredited. They are not us, they have no stake in who we accept, and you can look them up before you ever speak to us.
Every applicant is screened before approval, including you. Not after you’ve signed. Not after you’ve bought a membership. It’s part of how we decide whether to accept someone, which is also why the person sitting across from you cleared the same bar you did.
What the check does
- A criminal record check, performed by Triton Canada.
- A search of the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database, using the applicant’s name and date of birth.
- The check runs before approval, as part of the application, not after membership begins.
- Both sides of every introduction are screened this same way, not just the person who applied first.
- Triton Canada collects your consent and runs the check directly. Love Collective does not see or store the criminal record result itself.
What the check can’t do
- A name/date-of-birth CPIC search is not a fingerprint-based check. It is not “RCMP-certified” and it does not confirm identity the way a fingerprint search would.
- It cannot catch an offence that was never reported, charged, or recorded under a name and birthdate that match what’s on file.
- It is a record of the past, not a prediction of behaviour. A clean check is not a promise about how someone will treat you.
- It does not replace your own judgment. We ask you to use normal caution on any date, the same as you would meeting anyone new.
Why we do it this way
I’d rather turn someone away than put you across a table from them.
The checks cost us money on every applicant we decline, and the $97 application fee doesn’t come close to covering the ones that don’t work out. That’s fine. It’s the cost of running this properly. You should be able to walk into a first date thinking about the conversation, not about who this person actually is.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who performs Love Collective’s background checks?
Love Collective’s background checks are performed by Triton Canada, an independent Toronto-based screening company. Triton is a member of the Professional Background Screening Association, SOC 2 certified, and BBB accredited.
What database does the check search?
The check searches the RCMP’s Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) database, using the applicant’s name and date of birth.
When does screening happen?
Screening happens before approval, as part of the application process, not after someone has already signed on as a member.
Does Love Collective see my criminal record result?
Love Collective does not see or store the criminal record result itself. Triton Canada collects consent and runs the check directly, and communicates only the outcome relevant to the application decision.
Is a background check a guarantee of safety?
A background check is not a guarantee of safety. It is a genuine screening step, but a name/date-of-birth CPIC search has real limits: it cannot catch an unreported offence, and it is not a fingerprint-based or identity-certified check. Use the same normal caution on any introduction that you would meeting anyone new.
